District Governor T. N. Subramanian
T.N. Subramanian (affectionately called Raju), strolled through the educational pathway beginning with schooling at Don Bosco, graduation at Jaihind college & a law degree from Government Law College. With a keen interest in student welfare, he was drawn into student politics and was the general secretary in both college student unions. From college, the next step was University of Mumbai, where Raju became the First General Secretary of the Bombay University Students Council & the First Member of the University Senate.
To a gift of the gab if you add a thesaurus like vocabulary, Kalashnikov speed of articulation, haazir jawaab wit, razor sharp thinking, grass root common sense, lots of energy and clarity of thought you get someone who can talk and talk well. And where can this type of talking take you: onto the podium to receive innumerable prizes in collegiate and inter varsity debating and public speaking competitions, onto the small screen of DD as a compere, onto the stage at a fashion show or beauty contest as a presenter, and onto the ranga mancha at gala nites and musical shows as an emcee.
Then if you extend the talking USP into a vocation in life, built on the foundations of knowledge, hard work and dedication, what does that open up - a brilliant career as an Advocate on the Original and Appellate side of the Bombay High Court, other High Courts and the Supreme Court of India. The Hon'ble Judges of the Bombay High Court designated him as a Senior Advocate. On the panel of Arbitrators of the Indian Merchants Chamber, he himself appears in national and international arbitrations. A very popular and successful legal practitioner, his vocational colleagues made him a member of the Standing Committee of the Bombay Bar Association. For many years, Raju has offered an appreciating ear as a judge in National and International Moot Court Competitions.
As an effective and excellent communicator he has addressed many a Rotary club meeting, inter city forum, training session, assembly and conferences. It was a matter of time before the style, commitment and dedication came to the fore and colleagues in Rotary decided that Rtn Raju ban jaye their gentleman's gentleman in 2009-10. His utterances find prime space in different Rotary media - a 20 minute interview at 2009 San Diego International Assembly to be used for promoting Rotary world wide (only one of 13 DGE's from a batch of 533), an invitation to address their PETS by three fellow DGE's and the coup de grace -an appearance on the website of Rotary International in a video presentation on Polio & half an hour interaction with Bill Gates Jr!
Coming naturally to DG Raju is a capacity to listen too. He's been listening to fellow Rotarians in the Rotary Club of Deonar for 22 years (charter member); lending a ear to his BOD in 1996-97 as the club president; hearing out for 3140 DG's since 1996-97, carrying out their assignments in various capacities such as Avenue Chair, Assistant Governor, District Secretary, Chief Coordinator, etc.. This special ability of listening has made Raju to be known as a simple, ethical, popular team player, friendly, down to earth, approachable, endowed with abundant infectious enthusiasm.
Systematic in approach, perfect in planning, innovative in execution and with strong beliefs in fiscal discipline and stewardship has seen Raju organize various district events with the crowning glory being the Centennial District Assembly and Centennial RIP's district visit. These same attributes see him as a trustee and functionary of many social and religious organizations including the SIES group of educational institutions.
The Rotary Foundation enamors Raju. He is a Major donor, a member of the Paul Harris Society, with all family members contributing to be Paul Harris Fellows. In the "EREY" Every Rotarian Every Year flier his quote (one of three) for contribution to TRF has adorned the leaves from 2007-08 to date. He has been honored with TRF's District Service Award four times and the District Distinguished Service Award thrice.
The one person who he listens and looks upto for advise is spouse Rtn Vidhya. This charming, bubbly lady is a special educator and a Rotarian at RC Deonar. She also is a Charter Member and Past President of the Inner Wheel Club of Deonar. Vidhya and Raju are blessed with two lovely daughters - Dr. Ashwita who takes pride in community service and Capt. Rohita (a short term IYE student alumni) who flies through cloud nine as a commercial pilot with Jet Airways.
Message from Raju
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
'RI President John Kenny has given us a theme that truly illuminates the path that we are to take in 2009-10. It empowers each one of us fixing the responsibility of the Future of Rotary in our hands.
It beckons us to serve with humility and simplicity, however always ensuring that we walk the path of Service with integrity and ethics in all our actions and deeds both in Rotary and in our profession or vocation.
It talks about the future, which future lies with the youth in society. We need to nurture and guide them for a better tomorrow for Rotary and the communities whom we seek to serve. We need to change our mindsets and attitude. We need to believe in others, trust them and empower them. We must look beyond ourselves and serve beyond self. We need to ensure that there is true and genuine fellowship. All our actions and service must be only for furthering the interests of Rotary. Our path and goal should be to serve humanity selflessly on the glorious traditions, values ethics and ethos of Rotary.
105 years of service to communities round the globe can only be possible by a vibrant and committed organization which has as its members people who truly believe in the ideals of the organization. Let us cherish, live and uphold these ideals to the best of our ability.
Continuity is the key to success in any walk of life. It is no different even though we are in the business of service. The theme also asks us to look at the future. Keeping both these aspects in mind we felt that we will be failing in our duty to society if we do not tackle the issue of Global Warming to take care of the future and a related core issue of Water, also a RI thrust area. Empowering our women and the differently able as well as our youth by providing vocational training will benefit the family and the future of the communities. Hence keeping continuity as well as the future in mind, water and vocational training are areas of service which we can ill afford to neglect. If the future of Rotary is in your hands, i know it is safe but it also is reasonable that the future of the world is your hands too. Hence it is imperative for us to protect and save mother earth. We need to take care of the future.
I urge you to therefore concentrate on these thrust areas not because the DG wants you to but because the future requires you to.
Friends, we have a great responsibility on our shoulders - TO END POLIO NOW. We need to redouble our efforts and ensure that we support the cause of eradication of Polio, a dream of Rotary, that we must make come true. The Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation $ 255 million challenge must spur us on to ensure that the world is rid of Polio. We must rise to the occasion and ensure that we help in the challenge in all manner possible, utilizing all the resources at our disposal. Rotary accepted the challenge only because of its confidence in YOU.
We have an opportunity to Lead & Serve. Let us truly utilize the year to motivate our fellow Rotarians & channelize our resources both human and others for the common good of Rotary and the community.
Let us serve well and Lead the Way. Let us share our successes that others can emulate to benefit the community. Let us me the harbingers of change - for good and for the cause of Rotary. Let us accept my friends that each one of us are human and hence may and do go wrong at times. However let us not hurt others in the process of whatever we do. Let us be caring, loving and genuine in all that we do and and in the relationships we share in Rotary. Let us be graceful in our actions and honest in our commitments. Lets us respect the views of others and use our talents to find lasting solutions. Let us build bridges for a better morrow within and outside of Rotary. " Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile, " said Albert Einstein. Let us make our life truly worthwhile.'
Sincerely,
Raju
