RI President Kalyan Banerjee
RI President Kalyan Banerjee, is a member of the Rotary Club of Vapi, Gujarat
India since 1972, is the third Indian to serve Rotary International as it’s president when he takes over on 1st July, 2011. Banerjee says he would like to see Rotary blossom from being the world’s most recognised service organisation to being the most important NGO (nongovernmental organisation) in the world. Rotary, it is said has the strength of a government and the tenderness of a parent.
Banerjee is director of United Phosphorus Limited, the largest agrochemical manufacturer in India, and the chair of United Phosphorus (Bangladesh) Limited. He is a member of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society, a past President of the Vapi Industries Association and a former chair of the Gujarat chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. Kharagpur in 1964.
Kalyan has served Rotary as a RI Director, Rotary Foundation Trustee, committee and task force chair, International Assembly group discussion leader, RI President’s Representative and of course District Governor of RI District 3060. He has also served as chair of the South East Asia Regional Polio Plus Committee and as a member of International Polio Plus Committee for many years. In that capacity he has attended international meeting with World Health Qrganisation (WHO) and UNICEF.
He is a Major donor, Benefactor, and Bequest Society Member. In recognition of his services. He has been awarded TRF’s Citation for Meritorious Service an Distinguished Service Award. Kalyan also serves as a trustee of Rotary Club sponsored trusts that support many educational and community development programs in India including a 250 bedded hospital in Vapi.
He noted that Rotary’s strengths include its ability to attract leaders from different vocations around the world, as well as itls role in promoting peace. Rotary, he says, needs to become the preferred organisation for today’s generation to join and participate in to make the world a better, safer and happier place to live in Kalyan’s better half Binota is a social worker and Inner Wheel Club member. The couple are blessed with two children and four grand children.
