Inner Wheel
In 1923, Mrs. Margaret Oliver Golding, a trained nurse and a wife of a Rotarian, took first step to form an organization of the wives of Rotarians. In 1924, the wives of Rotarians of Manchester Club adopted the title – INNER WHEEL. The inaugural meeting of IWC Manchester (Great Britain) was held on 10th January 1924. Since then 10th January is celebrated as the International Inner Wheel Day all over the world from 1936, newly formed clubs started getting the Charter – Certificate of membership. Today there are 4 Associations with 168 Districts, 3,894 clubs and 99,889 members. International Inner Wheel is one of the largest Women’s Organisation spread over 103 countries.
Inner Wheel in India as “Association of I.W. Clubs in India”
Inner Wheel came to India in 1955. The first I.W. Club started in Ahmedabad, thus giving birth to the first District in India, numbered as 75 (later as 305). Lavender Weightman, the First IIW President came to India & combined 4 Districts and named it as “National Council of India”. On 1st July 1976, the ‘Association of I.W. Clubs in India and Sri. Lanka’ was born. Today it is the ‘Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India’ with 27 Districts, 1008 clubs and 27,401 members till 15th May 2011.
India has the honor of having 4 IIW Presidents:
Minna Kapur (1986-87), Anita Agarwal (1993-94), Kamala Ramkrishanan (2007-08) & Dr. Pallavi Shah 2010-11.
